NFL – Lions safety Morice Norris arrives at the team’s training facility after injury
Detroit Lions safety Morice Norris was at the team’s training facility with teammates on Sunday, two days after he was taken off the field in an ambulance late in a preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons, according to a person familiar with the situation. The person, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to share the details, says Norris was released from an Atlanta hospital and returned home on Saturday. NFL – Detroit Lions’ Morice Norris injury raises memories of similar recent NFL incidents
The sight of Detroit Lions safety Morice Norris being carted off the field during a preseason game at Atlanta raised memories several recent similar incidents occurring in both NFL preseason and regular-season outings. The most frightening happened in January 2023 when Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin went into cardiac arrest and had to be resuscitated on the field after attempting to make a routine tackle during the first quarter of a regular-season game at Cincinnati. The last time a preseason game was stopped before completion actually happened in consecutive weeks in August 2023.

Dolphins 24, Bears 24 – TIE – Dolphins, Bears finish in 24-24 tie in the preseason
Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa had an efficient start to the preseason Sunday and the Miami Dolphins and the Bears finished in a 24-24 tie in Ben Johnson’s Chicago coaching debut. Playing in a preseason opener for the first time since 2021, Tagovailoa completed 5 of 6 for 27 yards in a 15-play drive against Bears backups, but the Dolphins failed to score on their first drive because of a Bears goal-line stand. Bears quarterback Caleb Williams did not play.
NCAAFB – Irish lose TE Kevin Bauman and RB Kedren Young to season-ending knee injuries
Notre Dame has announced sixth-year tight end Kevin Bauman and second-year running back Kedren Young suffered season-ending knee injuries in practice this week. Bauman suffered an articular cartilage injury in his left knee, which will require surgery. He also announced on social media that this will be the end of his football career. Young tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Bauman was expected to play a key role for the Fighting Irish this season after Mitchell Evans was selected in the NFL draft. Young was projected to add depth to Notre Dame’s already deep backfield.
WNBA – A’ja Wilson shocked at becoming first WNBA player with a 30-20 double-double
There was only one way Las Vegas Aces coach Becky Hammon could describe reigning WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson becoming the first player in league history to register a 30-20 double-double. The coach said it was just “A’ja being A’ja.” Wilson finished with 32 points on 13-of-25 shooting to go along with her second-career 20-rebound night. It was her 14th double-double of the season. She led the Aces to a 94-86 victory over the Connecticut Sun on Sunday night. Wilson said it’s shocking to think she’s the first with a 30-20 game given all the great players in the league.

MLB – Pawol breaks gender barrier, earns good reviews for her work behind the plate
Jen Pawol breezed through Sunday’s Marlins-Braves game as if breaking a gender barrier was just another day on the job. Considering Pawol became the first female umpire to work behind the plate in the majors, finding a way to make history appear to be routine was especially impressive. It was an impressive cap to a memorable weekend for Pawol. She made history in Saturday’s doubleheader as the first female umpire to work a regular-season game in the majors. She moved behind the plate for the Braves’ 7-1 win on Sunday, placing her in the brightest spotlight for an umpire.
MLB – Verlander has muted reaction reaching 3,500-strikeout mark
Justin Verlander added another memorable chapter to his legendary pitching career Sunday, yet was hardly in the mood to celebrate. Verlander struck out the side in the first inning against the Nationals to become the 10th pitcher in MLB history to reach 3,500 career strikeouts. Not long after, things began to unravel for the three-time Cy Young Award winner as the Giants dropped an 8-0 decision to Washington in front of 40,000 fans at Oracle Park. Washington scored four times in the second inning and five overall on 11 hits against Verlander in the latest outing in what has been a season-long struggle for the 42-year-old.
