
Several have been injured in the crash between an SUV and an Amish buggy in Van Buren County.
The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department says deputies were sent to the 45,000 block of County Road 388 around 7:45 p.m. Friday on a report of an SUV that had crashed into a buggy. They arrived to find five of the buggy’s occupants had “obvious injuries,” and began performing life saving measures on the person with the most serious injuries.
Multiple ambulances then arrived and took all six of the buggy’s occupants to the hospital . Four of them had serious injuries, while one was critically injured.
Police say the driver of the SUV remained on scene and was cooperative with deputies during the initial investigation. It has found the buggy was westbound on CR 388 when it was hit from behind by the SUV.
Police say it appeared that speed and alcohol were both factors in the crash. The driver of the SUV was arrested for operating while intoxicated causing serious injury and lodged at the Van Buren County Jail.
County road 388 was closed for four hours while the crash was investigated.
