In just a few weeks, it’ll be time for the Mackinac Bridge Walk on Labor Day.
The Michigan Department of Transportation already has signs along I-75 about the bridge being closed from 6:30 to noon on Labor Day.
The walk over the bridge will start once again from both ends of the bridge, in St. Ignace and Mackinac City. MDOT’s James Lake explains.
“We have a lot of people who park on the side that they intend to leave from,” Lake said. “They’ll walk maybe half the bridge and then back to their vehicle. They don’t have to worry about a bus. They don’t have to worry about another ride or anything. Then we’ve got some people who are choosing to be what locals are calling double crossers, crossing all the way across the bridge, all the way back.”
This is the 67th year for the walk, which usually attracts politicians and around 30,000 people.
