The Benton Township Police Department is planning a car show for next month.

Chief Greg Abrams addressed the township board of trustees this week, saying he’s teamed up with the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety and Slumberland Furniture for the event to be held in the furniture store’s parking lot off Napier Avenue. Abrams tells us he’s been a big car fan since he was in the military and worked as a mechanic.

Being a car enthusiast and being to so many other car shows, I just felt that that would be something different because we’ve never had our own car show before,” Abrams said. “I think, who knows what it can grow into for the community?”

Abrams says in future years, the show may charge admission and then donate the proceeds to a charity. However, this year, he wants to start out simple and keep it free.

I think it would be great for the community to come out and look at the cars and maybe get a little bit of history behind them from some of the owners.”

Abrams told trustees the tentative date for this first ever “Benton Township-Benton Harbor Community Car Show” is September 20 because that’s a Saturday on which no other car shows are being held in the area.

Trustees approved the show with an understanding Abrams will get with the township attorney to work out liability details and then report back. He’s expecting around 200 cars at the event, noting the parking lot can hold 300.
