A Paw Paw High School junior is about to make history by competing at the Michigan High School Individual Wrestling Championships this week.
Paw Paw Public Schools says Angel Miller will be the first female wrestler from Paw Paw to take part in the event at Ford Field in Detroit Friday and Saturday. Wrestling teammates Gavin Turk and Austin George, both seniors, will also be competing.
Angel has been wrestling for less than a year, having started out powerlifting as a freshman. She says with wrestling, she’s learned “not to get in my head a lot.” Angel adds, “Wrestling is one of those physical sports, but it’s mostly mental, and even though you might think you’re going to lose, you’ve got to walk in there and say, ‘I’m going to win. No matter what, I’m going to win.'”
Coach Holly Williams says Angel was timid and shy, but her hard work shows on the mat.
