The Michigan Department of Transportation has announced the recipients of its annual Local Grade Crossing Surface Program for 2024, and one Berrien County railroad crossing is on the list. MDOT says the John Beers Road railroad crossing will be improved.

In all, 26 projects were awarded around $3 million to fund highway-railroad grade crossing surface improvements. The projects could involve anything from minor asphalt repairs to installing completely new track and surface materials.

The program offers 60% funding for eligible projects, with railroads responsible for the remaining 40% of the costs. All repair work is performed by the railroad company and its contractors.

With the village of Stevensville included in the list, residents can expect to see some improvements of the John Beers railroad crossing downtown in the next year.
