Reaction to the Hamas attack on Israel over the weekend was swift from most members of Southwest Michigan’s congressional delegation.
In their brief but pointed statements, members of Congress were unanimous in their support for Israel and condemnation of Hamas.
U.S. Senator Gary Peters – “I am horrified by the vicious, coordinated terrorist attacks by Hamas on innocent Israeli citizens. I condemn this terrorism – cruelly timed on Simchat Torah & during the 50th anniversary of the Yom Kippur War – in the strongest terms. We must continue to stand with Israel.”
Congressman Bill Huizenga – “These attacks on Israel and the kidnapping of Israeli civilians are a coordinated effort around the 50th Anniversary of the Yom Kippur War. We must stand with Israel and help Israel stand strong against Hamas and their backers like Iran.”
Congressman Tim Walberg – “America stands unwaveringly with our great ally, Israel, in light of these ongoing Hamas terrorist attacks. We will continue to support and pray for Israel during this sickening time.”
A statement from U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow was not immediately available. We have reached out to her office for comment.
According to the Associated Press, the Ford carrier strike group has been ordered to sail to the Eastern Mediterranean to be ready to assist Israel after the attack by Hamas that has left more than 1,000 dead on both sides. Americans were reported to be among those killed and missing.
The USS Gerald R. Ford, the Navy’s newest and most advanced aircraft carrier, and its approximately 5,000 sailors and deck of warplanes will be accompanied by cruisers and destroyers in a show of force that is meant to be ready to respond to anything, from possibly interdicting additional weapons from reaching Hamas and conducting surveillance.
