Berrien County Road Worker Killed In Workplace Incident

A worker for the Berrien County Road Department is dead after being struck by a vehicle in Oronoko Township on Wednesday. The Berrien Springs Oronoko Township Police Department says officers were called to the scene at Red Bud Trail near Glendora Road around 3 p.m. They arrived to learn the road department employee had been cutting up a fallen tree that was in the road across Red Bud Trail when a southbound vehicle driven by a 34-year-old Buchanan man struck the tree and the worker. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle sustained minor injuries and was arrested for operating while intoxicated causing death. The name of the worker has not yet been released. The crash remains under investigation with help from Michigan State Police. Berrien County Administrator Brian Dissette says all Berrien County Road Department facilities will be closed for the rest of the week. Additionally, all Berrien County Board of Commissioners meetings scheduled for Thursday are canceled.
