South Haven Area Emergency Services personnel braved frigid water on Saturday to rescue a chihuahua from a pond. SHAES says the crew responded to the pond behind the Church of Later Day Saints on 73 1/2 Street in South Haven Township shortly before 2 p.m. on a report of a dog in the water. The 12-year-old chihuahua, Sasha had broken through thin ice and went underwater as responder Matt Dey, in a cold water rescue suit, neared it. He quickly recovered the dog and returned to shore safely. The dog had been the subject of a search in that area for a few days after getting away from its owners, new residents of South Haven. Sasha was taken to a local vet and reported to be recovering.
