The St. Joseph Harbor will be dredged this year, after all. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers hadn’t been planning to dredge in St. Joseph this year, but Congressman Fred Upton says he requested emergency dredging to ensure Great Lakes freighters can pass through. The St. Joseph Harbor needs to accommodate Lake Michigan freight carriers for sand and gravel required for the completion of US-31 to I-94. Upton says the work could have been delayed a year “as the Lake Michigan freight carriers told me they would not go beyond the Railroad Bridge without dredging.” The Army Corps this week announced it’s approved $500,000 for the dredging project. Upton calls the news “a huge victory for the people of southwest Michigan.”
