Berrien County Treasurer Bret Witkowski is continuing to hold meetings throughout the area with property owners at risk of losing their homes and businesses to foreclosure due to unpaid property taxes. County Commissioner Mamie Yarbrough told the Benton Harbor City Commission this week that Witkowski’s latest forum is going to be next weekend on Saturday, February 27 at the Benton Harbor Public Library from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“We will have people sign in,” said Yarbrough, adding they will be seen by representatives of the Treasurer’s Office in that order. She adds the discussions will be held in private.
That meeting will be for people only in the 49022 Zip code, which includes the city of Benton Harbor and Benton Charter Township. Witkowski’s office is mailing out 700 letters to people in that Zip code who are in danger of being foreclosed upon this spring if action is not taken before the end of March to get into a payment plan if the full debt can’t be paid at once. Previous meetings to set up payment plans have been held in Niles and Buchanan in recent weeks.
