Tigers 10, Royals 9 – Tigers extend win streak to 6 by rallying in 9th for rain-delayed 10-9 victory over Royals
Riley Greene doubled home two runs to tie the score with two outs in the ninth inning, and Colt Keith followed with the winning single as the streaking Detroit Tigers rallied past the Kansas City Royals 10-9 in a wild game delayed twice by rain. Dillon Dingler launched a two-run homer and Greene finished with three hits for the Tigers, who squandered a five-run lead but recovered to win their sixth straight following a five-game skid. Salvador Perez drove in four for the Royals, including a three-run homer to cap a six-run seventh that gave them an 8-6 lead. Vinnie Pasquantino also went deep and Bobby Witt Jr. had three hits and scored three times. Kansas City has dropped four in a row, all by one run.
Rays 5, White Sox 3 – Rays rally in 9th for 5-3 win over White Sox, stretch win streak to 6
Junior Caminero homered and the Tampa Rays scored twice on bases-loaded walks in the ninth inning, rallying for a 5-3 win over the Chicago White Sox. The Rays (11-7) trailed by one run three times before pulling ahead against White Sox (6-13) relievers Seranthony Dominguez and Lucas Sims, extending their winning streak to six games. Dominguez exited to boos with the bases loaded and one out after allowing Caminero’s leadoff home run, a single, a walk, a hit batter and a wild pitch. Sims struck out Jake Fraley before walking Hunter Feduccia and Taylor Walls.

MLB – Dodgers shatter MLB’s spending record at $515 million in 2025
The Dodgers shattered Major League Baseball’s spending record with a combined $515 million in payroll and luxury tax last year en route to their second straight World Series title, according to final figures compiled by the commissioner’s office, and Los Angeles is projected for the highest total again in 2026. Los Angeles’ 2025 spending included records for payroll at $345.3 million and tax of $169.4 million. Despite having several contracts discounted to reflect deferred payments, the Dodgers’ total was seven times the $68.7 million payroll of the Miami Marlins, the lowest-spending team, and more than the payrolls of the bottom six clubs combined.

NBA – Doncic and Cunningham eligible for NBA awards after appeals of 65-game rule.
The Los Angeles Lakers’ Luka Doncic and Detroit’s Cade Cunningham will be eligible for awards such as MVP and All-NBA this season despite falling short of the 65-game minimum. The league and the National Basketball Players Association announced the ruling on Thursday. Doncic played in 64 games and Cunningham played in 63. But the league and the union both agreed that each should be on the ballot based on the “extraordinary circumstances provision” in the collective bargaining agreement. An appeal to get Minnesota’s Anthony Edwards on the ballot failed.
NBA – Ex- player Damon Jones expected to become first to plead guilty in gambling sweep
Ex-NBA player and assistant coach Damon Jones is expected to become the first person to plead guilty in a gambling sweep that led to the arrests of more than 30 people, including reputed mobsters and other basketball figures. A change of plea hearing for Jones is scheduled for April 28 in Brooklyn federal court. That’s according to court filings on Thursday. The 49-year-old Jones had previously pleaded not guilty to separate indictments charging him with profiting from rigged poker games and providing sports bettors with non-public information about injuries to stars LeBron James and Anthony Davis. A message seeking comment was left for his lawyer, Kenneth Montgomery.
NHL – Bedard’s next contract is a top priority for Blackhawks in an important offseason
The Chicago Blackhawks are moving into another big summer after going 29-39-14 this year, an 11-point improvement on the previous season and nowhere near playoff contention. They have finished No. 31 in the NHL each of the last three years. Connor Bedard is eligible for restricted free agency, but it’s unlikely that his contract situation lingers for that long. He has said repeatedly how much he likes playing in Chicago and expressed confidence in the direction of the team. And Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson says they plan to start working on Bedard’s new contract soon.
NCAAFB – NCAA recommends earlier start to football season for starting in 2027
An NCAA committee is recommending that Football Bowl Subdivision teams play a 12-game schedule over 14 weeks beginning in 2027 with the season starting on the Thursday of what is now designated Week Zero and ending the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The Division I FBS Oversight Committee made the recommendation. The Division I Cabinet would have to approve it. A 14-week regular season would provide each team with two open dates. Making room for two open dates will allow more rest for players, which has been a concern for teams advancing in the CFP.
NFL – Bears have plenty of options in NFL draft in trying to improve team
The Chicago Bears come into the draft with needs on the offensive line as well as defensive end and safety. When it comes to choosing a direction, general manager Ryan Poles has choices, starting with the No. 25 pick on April 23. Chicago also has two second-rounders, a third-rounder, a fourth-rounder and two seventh-rounders. The Bears went 11-6 and won the NFC North for the first time since 2018 in coach Ben Johnson’s first season after finishing last in 2024. Quarterback Caleb Williams made big strides in his second season. The Bears advanced in the playoffs for the first time in 15 years.
NFL – Lions may use NFL draft to address needs at offensive tackle and edge rusher
The Detroit Lions were not very aggressive in NFL free agency, choosing to save salary cap space to sign some key players to long-term extensions. Detroit desperately needed help at center, a year after Frank Ragnow’s retirement left a huge issue. General manager Brad Holmes addressed the void with perhaps his most significant transaction this year. The Lions signed Cade Mays to a $25 million, three-year deal in the hopes of solidifying an offensive line that struggled last season.
WNBA – Lynx re-sign 5-time All-Star forward Napheesa Collier
The Minnesota Lynx have re-signed five-time All-Star forward Napheesa Collier. The team announced the move Thursday night but didn’t provide contract details. ESPN reported that Collier signed a one-year, $1.4 million supermax deal. This comes a day after the Las Vegas Aces re-signed A’ja Wilson to a three-year, $5 million supermax contract, the most lucrative in WNBA history. The 29-year-old Collier averaged a career-high 22.9 points per game last season. She became the first WNBA player to achieve 50/40/90 shooting splits while averaging 20 or more points per game.
Golf – Tiger Woods’ lawyer vows to fight subpoena for prescription records in DUI case
Tiger Woods’ attorney plans to fight prosecutors’ attempts to subpoena the golfer’s prescription drug records. The attorney argues that Woods has a constitutional right to privacy regarding his medications. He asked a judge in Florida this week to hold a hearing to determine if the records are necessary for the investigation. Woods has pleaded not guilty to driving under the influence. Authorities say he showed signs of impairment after an accident last month. Prosecutors are seeking his prescription records from a pharmacy in Palm Beach. Prosecutors also demanded the names and locations of any witnesses Woods plans to present in his defense.
