The mayor of Niles is getting some laughs online after issuing an April Fools’ Day press release announcing a fake citywide parking program.
Niles Mayor Nick Shelton posted a mock statement Wednesday claiming the city would introduce paid downtown parking using “mandatory microchips” installed in every vehicle to track time and automatically charge drivers.
“Instead of traditional parking meters, the City will utilize a system of mandatory city-issued microchips installed in each vehicle, which will automatically track parking duration and charge registered accounts accordingly,” the statement reads.
The release went on to say the program would expand into residential neighborhoods by the end of April, include fees for replacement chips, and even offer a monthly subscription option.
The announcement also listed a tongue-in-cheek media contact email: “madeyoulook@mayornickshelton.com.”
Happy April Fools’ Day!
