The Galien River Sanitary District Sewer Authority in New Buffalo is receiving a $2 million federal grant to help improve the area’s sewer system.
Congressman Tim Walberg tells us he was able to secure the funds to help the sewer authority replace its tertiary filter, an essential component of the water treatment process.
“That will assist in putting together their filter,” Walberg said. “I learned more about water purification from the sewer systems, etc., than I’ve ever known before, but these are big filters that enable us to use our resources in a greater stewardship fashion and make sure that we have clean water that at the very least is then funneled back into our river systems and, of course the lake, as well.”
Walberg was in New Buffalo lastweek to meet with district leaders after announcing the grant for the system. He tells us this project will replace infrastructure dating back to the 1970s.
Walberg calls it “a neat project,” adding the district put in significant work with his office to make sure they got everything right.
