The Berrien County Health Department will be offering free hearing and vision screenings for kids throughout spring break.

Health department hearing and vision coordinator Melisa Jordan tells us they screen hundreds of students each year as the state requires at certain grade levels for school.

Screening’s important because it catches any student that may be struggling in school, whether it be with their hearing or vision, and they’re struggling to get those grades up,” Jordan said. “If we could find that issue and resolve that issue, [we can] get them to be successful and getting great grades in school.”

Jordan says what better time to make sure your child has no vision or hearing problems than when they’re off from school?

We’re holding the clinics during our spring break time, especially for those students that are either virtual or homeschooled. This is a great opportunity for their parents to bring them in and just make sure that they’re up to par and seeing what we consider normal hearing and vision.”

Clinics will be held March 30 at the health department’s Benton Harbor office, and on March 31 at the Niles office. Jordan says they only take about 15 minutes.

Those interested in bringing their kids in for screenings can make an appointment online. You can do so right here.
