Dr. Stephen E. Jess, a beacon of wisdom and kindness, passed away peacefully from natural causes on March 11, 2026, in Mishawaka, Indiana. Born on October 21, 1941, in Green Bay, Wisconsin, he was the beloved son of the late Harvey and Agnes (Engels) Jess. Stephen’s life was one of dedication, not only to his family but also to the countless students he guided throughout his career.

Stephen’s journey with his cherished wife, Deborah Brumitt Jess, began on a joyful note as they exchanged vows in Niles, Michigan, on December 29, 2001. Their love and companionship remained steadfast through the years, and she continues to honor his memory. His legacy flourishes through his four children: Stephen (Catherine) Jess of Crosby, Texas, Kristin Jess-Seely (Jeff) of Temple, Texas, Kurt (Laurie) Jess of Bloomington, Minnesota, and Joanie Jess-Zakoor of Elkhart, Indiana, as well as his many step-children. Stephen’s joy was multiplied with the birth of each of his seven grandchildren: Gavin, Alycia, Jessika, Rebekah, Kyla, Hannah, Kephren and his great-grandson, Stephen, who will miss their beloved patriarch deeply. His sister, Karen (Robert) Cassidy of Kingwood, Texas, remembers him fondly, cherishing the memories they shared.

A man of profound intellect and insight, Dr. Jess earned his PhD. in Education, which laid the foundation for a distinguished career. For forty-four years, he served as a Professor of Social Science and History at Southwestern Michigan College, where his passion for teaching and his commitment to his students’ success left an indelible mark. His wisdom and intelligence made him a respected figure among peers and pupils alike.

Beyond the walls of academia, Stephen was an avid coin collector, a hobby that reflected his appreciation for history and the stories embedded within each piece. He found solace in the serenity of fishing, the camaraderie of golfing, and the connections fostered through social media, where he kept up with family and friends. Stephen was a true educator at heart, one who loved to share knowledge and inspire curiosity in all areas of life.
