Severe weather in the last week has reminded many that it’s a good idea to sign up for a service that provides alerts to users when there’s an emergency, and the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department Emergency Management Division offers just that.

Berrien County emergency management coordinator Captain David Albers tells us B-Warn is a system the county’s had for about five years. Anyone can register for it.

Any warnings that go out, they get sent again through the B-Warn system to anyone who has signed up,” Albers said. “In case you’re not in the area and don’t get that wireless emergency alert, this is kind of a backup system to that.”

Albers says you can get a text alert, an email, or even an automated phone call. So, what does the system warn people about?

It varies from a boil water notice all the way to a tornado warning, severe thunderstorm warning, blizzard warnings. There’s weather alerts for wind, flood, marine, everything that you can think of pretty much.”

Albers says each user can decide what sorts of alerts they want and how. He says hundreds of Berrien County residents are signed up for B-Warn.
