The Cass County Sheriff’s Department is warning residents in tornado-damaged areas to watch out for potential scams as cleanup begins.

The department says homeowners should be cautious of unfamiliar contractors offering quick repairs, especially those who are pushy, demand upfront payments, or insist you agree immediately. Residents with homeowners insurance are advised to refer any contractors directly to their insurance company before work begins.

Police are also urging caution with out-of-area tree removal crews offering discounted work for cash deposits or people who start work without permission and then demand payment.

Cass County Emergency Management says a nonprofit team is currently assessing tornado damage. Volunteer cleanup crews are expected to deploy in the coming days. Residents who need help will soon be able to apply for assistance through a link that will be posted on the county’s tornado information page.
