Students from St. Joseph are the big winners at the 2026 Annual Science Olympiad Competition hosted by Berrien RESA on Friday at Lake Michigan College.

The Olympiad featured teams from 14 middle and high schools, competing in a variety of challenges to display their technical prowess. RESA Student Talent Consultant Tonya Snyder told us last month the participating schools each form their own Science Olympiad teams who train all year for the big day. She says it’s inspiring to see the talent being displayed by all of these young people

It’s an academic competition,” Snyder said. “So that always is to be celebrated. Students are coming together, they’re studying in advance those STEM fields and they’re coming out and they’re celebrated for what they were able to retain, for what they were able to create.”

Among the middle schools, the winners Friday were, in order, Upton Middle School, followed by Lakeshore Middle School, Berrien Springs Middle School, and Buchanan Middle School. The high school winners were St. Joseph and Lakeshore. The top four middle schools and top two high schools from the full day competition have advanced to statewide finals competition in East Lansing at MSU on April 25.

Following Friday’s competition, each first place winner received blue ribbon gold medals, while those finishing in second place received red ribboned silver medals.
