Huizenga: ‘about time’ something done about Iran; office helping citizens get out of unsafe countries

Congressman Bill Huizenga says it’s about time someone does something about Iran.

As the U.S. air war against Iran nears the one-week mark, Huizenga tells us sanctions alone weren’t going to get Iran to obey international law or drop its nuclear program. He says previous attempts to negotiate with the country just gave it more time to build up its military.

But what happens next? Huizenga says there is potential for change in Iran because many citizens oppose the current regime and have protested it in large numbers.

We know that what we experienced in Iraq and Afghanistan is not something we want to go through again as a country,” Huizenga said. “Many of the same questions that surrounded the actions in Venezuela are being brought up again now,” Huizenga said.

Huizenga says it will have to be the Iranian people who decide on their next leaders and the U.S. will need to ensure extremists don’t have the means to crack down on those citizens for the choices they make.

We wondered if Huizenga’s office has been contacted by constituents trying to get out of the Middle East, and he said it has been. It’s been working since day one to get American citizens to safer regions.

There was a group of a number of our folks from the Fourth District and from West Michigan that were on a charter flight yesterday getting out of there. It’s kind of been individuals as well as some smaller groups, but virtually all of my colleagues have been dealing with that.”

Huizenga says it’s been difficult to secure commercial flights for these citizens, but things like charter flights, military flights, even flights offered by allied nations have enabled many Americans to get to safer territory. Some have even been taken on chartered buses.
