Imagine being whisked back to the 1940s for an afternoon. Everyone will have a chance to do so with a concert coming up at First Congregational Church UCC in South Haven this month.

Church music directors Diane Van Deurzen and Lisa Otey tell us they’re welcoming the Manhattan Dolls for a Sentimental Journey of World War II-era songs in the style of the Andrews Sisters on Sunday, March 15. Diane says the group hails from Tucson, Arizona and entertains thousands each year.

They perform all over the world,” Diane said. “They wear costumes of the period that they’re singing in, whether it’s wartime era or all the decades, and they go out and sing throughout the audience. They get people to sing along, and it’s a really good time.”

Lisa says The Manhattan Dolls always attract a good crowd.

A lot of times people feel a lot of comfort in songs from that era,” Lisa said. “It reminds them of their childhood or maybe when they first fell in love.”

But you don’t have to be an old timer to enjoy the music and the styles of the 1940s.

The Manhattan Dolls are swing-style female vocal trios started by a former USO performer. They travel around in troops of three to entertain, and the show in South Haven will help support First Congregational Church outreach programs, like its food pantry.

Tickets to the event are $20 and will be available at the door. The show will start at 3 p.m.
