Hughes scores in overtime as US beats Canada for first men’s hockey gold at the Olympics since 1980
Jack Hughes scored in overtime and the U.S. defeated Canada 2-1 in the gold medal final at the Milan Cortina Olympics on Sunday to earn the nation’s third men’s title at the Games and its first since the “Miracle on Ice” in 1980 — 46 years to the day of that upset win over the Soviet Union, too. Hughes lost some teeth before he won Olympic gold for the U.S. The forward who put the puck in the net in overtime to give the Americans a 2-1 victory over Canada in the men’s hockey final Sunday did so with a bloody mouth and less of a bite than he began the game with. That’s because Hughes was spittin’ chiclets after taking a stick to the mouth from Sam Bennett in the third period. The 24-year-old Hughes is a forward for the New Jersey Devils in the NHL. He scored past Canadian goalie Jordan Binnington early in overtime. Connor Hellebuyck made 41 stops on 42 shots for the US. Matt Boldy opened the scoring for Team USA with a first period goal, with Team Canada tying the game at 1-1 with a second period goal from Cale Makar. Team USA Went 6-0 during the tournament to secure the gold medal.

Twin Milan and Cortina Olympic cauldrons are extinguished, signaling the end of Winter Games
The twin Olympic cauldrons in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo have been extinguished, signaling the end of the most spread-out Winter Games. International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry declared the 2026 Games over in remarks to the closing ceremony in Verona, telling the local organizers that they “delivered a new kind of winter games and you set a new, very high standard for the future.” A total of 116 medal events have been held in eight Olympic sports across 16 disciplines, including the debut of ski mountaineering this year, over the course of 17 days of competition.

Khris Middleton scored 25 points and P.J. Washington added 23 to lead the Dallas Mavericks to a 134-130 victory over the Indiana Pacers, snapping a 10-game losing streak. Middleton also had seven rebounds and seven assists. Washington grabbed nine boards as the Mavs won for the first time since Jan. 22. It was Dallas’ longest skid since the 1997-98 season. All-Star forward Pascal Siakam returned from a three-game absence and led the Pacers with 30 points while grabbing eight rebounds. Andrew Nembhard had 22 points and 11 assists. Dallas led most of the game but struggled to pull away until the waning minutes.
Knicks 105, Bulls 98 – Towns has 28 points and 11 rebounds, Knicks top Bulls 105-99
Karl-Anthony Towns had 28 points and 11 rebounds for his NBA-leading 39th double-double and the New York Knicks outlasted the sliding Chicago Bulls 105-99 on Sunday night for their second straight victory. Towns scored six straight points — on a 3-pointer, a layup and free throw — after Chicago took a 95-94 lead with 3:52 left in regulation on Matas Buzelis’ 3. Mikal Bridges hit another 3-pointer with 27 seconds left, and Jalen Brunson iced it with two free throws. Brunson had 19 points and nine assists to help New York deal the Bulls a ninth straight loss. New York won a day after overcoming an 18-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat Houston 108-106 at home. Buzelis finished with 15 points for Chicago.

Golf – Jacob Bridgeman holds on at Riviera for first PGA Tour title
Jacob Bridgeman held on to win the Genesis Invitational at Riviera for his first PGA Tour title. It was a lot harder than he expected. Bridgeman started with a six-shot lead and expanded it to seven with 12 holes to play. But he didn’t make a birdie over the last 15 holes in his closing round of 72. Rory McIlroy and Kurt Kitayama made late charges that made Bridgeman sweat it out. They finished one shot behind. Bridgeman is the first player to make his Riviera debut and leave with a trophy since Adam Scott in 2005.
NASCAR – Tyler Reddick wins at Atlanta to give Michael Jordan second straight victory
Tyler Reddick rebounded from a crash to become the first driver in 17 years to sweep the first two races of a NASCAR Cup Series season, winning in double overtime Sunday at Echo Park Speedway. A week after winning the Daytona 500, Reddick gave 23XI Racing and co-owner Michael Jordan another victory by outdueling Chase Briscoe, Ross Chastain and Carson Hocevar. Bubba Wallace, who also drives for 23XI, led entering the final restart but was shuffled to eighth. Reddick raced to his 10th victory in NASCAR’s premier series despite front-end damage to his No. 45 Toyota sustained in a nine-car crash on the 224th lap. He’s the sixth driver to open a Cup season with consecutive victories and the first since Matt Kenseth in 2009.
Boxing – Claressa Shields pounds out lopsided victory over rival Franchon Crews-Dezurn
Claressa Shields won a lopsided unanimous decision over Franchon Crews-Dezurn to successfully defend her undisputed heavyweight championship at Little Caesars Arena on Sunday night. Shields, fighting at home, improved 18-0 (2 KOs), winning 100-90 on all three cards. Crews-Dezurn, who holds a super-middleweight title, fell to 10-3.The fight was a rematch of Shields’ four-round unanimous-decision victory Nov. 19, 2016, in the pro debuts for both fighters, and hard feelings were obvious when a brawl broke out at Saturday’s weigh-in. Crews-Dezurn saw a doctor Sunday morning to check knee and ankle injuries, but was able to fight.
