There’s new research about the Michigan Lottery and how much money it actually sends to schools.
Every year the state says the lottery contributes more than $1 billion to the State Aid Fund. Bridge Michigan reporter Isabel Lohman looked into how much actually goes into classrooms.
“So a billion dollars does go into the state aid fund, but when you are buying, let’s say, a $1 scratch-off ticket, about 25 cents of that is going into that state aid fund,” Lohman said. “When you take out community colleges and higher ed and some teacher pension retirement debt, you’re looking at closer to 22 cents.”
Lohman says the rest of the dollar goes towards lottery prizes, sales commissions, and operations and administration costs.
