The Benton Township Board of Trustees has authorized the purchase of some new radios for the fire department.
Benton Township Fire Chief Robert Harper tells us a partnership with Berrien County resulted in the acquisition of some new radios not too long ago, but it’s time for new ones.
“Four or five years ago, the county went in as a whole, so every fire department in the county could get new portable radios for communication, fire ground scenes, and we were part of that,” Harper said. “But with us running almost 1100 calls a year, these radios have been subjected to some really harsh environments.”
That is, some of the radios are no longer in the greatest shape.
Harper says these radios enable township firefighters to communicate with Berrien County Central Dispatch when they’re on scene, enabling dispatch to better coordinate communications and response. The
purchase of four radios authorized by trustees this week will cost a little more than $19,000.
