
Police in Benton Harbor have released the name of a man killed in an early morning shooting Sunday.
The Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety says 21-year-old Demarius Porter of Benton Harbor died after being shot. Officers responded to reports of gunfire in the early morning hours of February 1. During their investigation, they found an injured man. Authorities later determined the shooting happened in the 700 block of Lavette Street, although initial calls referenced the 600 block of Columbus Avenue.
Porter was treated at the scene and taken by ambulance to Corewell Health in St. Joseph, where he later died. An autopsy at Western Michigan University’s Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine determined the cause of death was fatal gunshot injuries.
Multiple agencies assisted in the investigation, including the FBI Violent Crime Task Force, ATF, Berrien County Sheriff’s Office, Benton Charter Township Police, St. Joseph Public Safety, and Michigan State Police. The investigation remains ongoing.
