With snow, ice, and extreme cold creating dangerous driving conditions, AAA of Michigan is reminding drivers to take proactive steps to stay safe this winter.
Adrienne Woodland, AAA spokeswoman, says drivers should prep their vehicles with winter tires, a strong battery, and proper fluid levels, and avoid speeding or tailgating. AAA recommends checking tire pressure weekly, testing batteries, inspecting brakes and lights, and using winter-grade fluids.
Winter weather also increases roadside assistance calls for dead batteries, tire problems, crashes, running out of fuel, and frozen locks. Woodland advises that if stranded, motorists should stay in their vehicles for shelter, turn on hazard lights, call for help, and conserve their phone battery.
For electric vehicle drivers, AAA warns that cold weather can reduce range by up to 40%. Preconditioning the battery, keeping it plugged in, charging more frequently, and optimizing cabin heating can help maintain performance.
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, crashes on snowy or icy roads result in roughly 1,300 deaths and 116,000 injuries each year.
AAA service providers remind drivers to follow the Slow Down, Move Over law to protect first responders during winter rescues. For assistance, members can use the AAA app, text roadside help, or call 800-222-1134.
