The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office is hiring temporary staff for their Marine Unit this summer, a role officials say promises a unique opportunity to work on local waterways.

The unit maintains boats in New Buffalo, St. Joseph, Paw Paw Lake, and along the St. Joseph River, working closely with the U.S. Coast Guard to ensure safe waterways.

Berrien County Sheriff Chuck Heit said the Marine Unit often hires temporary staff, often college-age individuals or those interested in law enforcement careers.

“The Marine Unit is a great way to gain experience, whether you’re looking to go into law enforcement or just want summer work on the water,” Heit said, noting that several deputies, including himself, started their careers in the unit.

Positions require a background check, a swim test, and availability on weekends and holidays. Training begins the first week of May, with patrols running from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

The sheriff’s office is accepting applications through February 28. Interested applicants can learn more at the sheriff’s office website.
