Lakeshore High School has announced the hiring of Mark Frey as the ninth varsity football coach in the school’s history.
Frey takes over a program with a long record of success, including 27 playoff appearances, 19 conference championships, 10 district titles, five regional championships and five state semifinal appearances.
Lakeshore’s announcement highlights that Frey comes to the role after seven seasons as head coach at Buchanan High School, where he compiled a 41-27 record and led the Bucks to five playoff appearances. During his tenure, Buchanan won three conference championships and earned academic all-state recognition five times, finishing in the top four statewide once. Frey was named Michigan High School Football Coaches Association Region Coach of the Year in 2020 and 2022. The program also grew from 27 players to more than 60 during his time there, and the team recorded a 100% graduation rate among four-year players.
Before Buchanan, Frey served as head coach at Riverdale High School in Ohio for five seasons. His collegiate and high school coaching experience also includes assistant coaching roles at Ohio Northern University, Dordt College and Concord High School in Indiana, working with multiple position groups and special teams.
Over the course of his career, Frey has coached 102 all-conference players, 25 all-region players and seven all-state players. He has also coached six Division I or Division II scholarship athletes and 23 academic all-state players. At Ohio Northern University, a secondary he coached finished 10th nationally in interceptions in 2013.
Frey earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics from Hanover College in 2011, where he was a two-sport athlete in football and lacrosse. He later earned a secondary teaching certificate from Dordt College and a Master of Arts in education administration from the University of Findlay.
“It is a privilege to lead a program with such a storied history as Lakeshore High School,” Frey said in a statement. “Our goal is to honor the legacy of those who came before us while pushing the program and our student-athletes to their maximum potential.”
Lakeshore Athletic Director Greg Younger said Frey stood out during the hiring process for his experience and leadership approach.
“Mark impressed us with his extensive experience and his ability to create a culture focused on preparation, confidence and high character,” Younger said. “He has a proven track record with a vast array of experience that he will bring to our program.”
