As President Donald Trump seeks to acquire Greenland for the United States, Congressman Bill Huizenga is urging that inflammatory rhetoric be avoided.
Huizenga tells us the idea of a military takeover of the island should be off the table.
“I believe that any discussion of somehow taking over Greenland in a hostile manner is wrongheaded, inappropriate, and shouldn’t be taken seriously,” Huizenga said. “Denmark is a member of NATO. They’ve been a good partner. We have treaties and agreements going back to World War II.”
The latest news, reported by Reuters, is that top officials in the federal government have discussed sending lump sum monetary payments to Greenlanders in an attempt to win them over. Meanwhile, Denmark maintains Greenland is not for sale and the vast majority of Greenlanders oppose joining the U.S.
Huizenga indicated there isn’t much of a path forward on this issue.
“I think what we have seen coming out of most people is they’re not interested in being sold to the United States. And again, I will point to the treaties and defense agreements that we have with them already as being sufficient, in my mind, to be able to achieve the goals and objectives of national security.”
Huizenga was to speak with the ambassador from Denmark this week. He says the call was requested by the ambassador.
As far as talk of hostilities between the U.S. and Denmark, Huizenga says everyone needs to “stop that rhetoric.”
