Its a crowded field heading into this year’s governor’s race.
With Governor Gretchen Whitmer term limited, we will soon be choosing a new head of state. Both Democratic and Republican fields are so far pretty crowded.
For the GOP, Congressman John James, former Attorney General Mike Cox, and state Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt are among the leading candidates. Candidates for the Democratic Party include Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, Lieutenant Governor Garland Gilchrist, and Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson.
A wild card is outgoing Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, who is running as an independent. Simon Schuster, a Capitol reporter for Bridge Michigan, says both parties are leery about Duggan’s presence in the race.
“Republicans are assailing him as a Democrat,” Schuster said. “He was a member of the Democratic Party until launching his gubernatorial campaign, while Democrats are focusing on the fact that he’s received support from prominent Republicans, including some supporters of President Donald Trump as well.”
The field will be trimmed down following the August 4 primary, leading to the November 3 general election.
