The city of Benton Harbor is sharing with residents some of the progress that’s been made at the Bobo Brazil Community Center as the effort to renovate the facility continues.

The center, also known to many as The Armory, has been closed since 2009 and the city has been working for the past few years to fix it up.

Phase One of the project focused on securing the building and protecting it from weather and further deterioration. That meant roof repairs, new windows and gutters, and upgraded security. They also fixed up the concrete steps, the garage door, and stairs. Phase One was paid for with a state grant of $900,000.

Phase Two of the renovations, just approved by city commissioners this month and also paid for with a state grant, will include reworking the restrooms, repairs to the building’s north end interior, modifications of the electrical and mechanical systems, and the installation of new finishes.

The city has posted photos showing the progress on its Facebook page. City leaders say they look forward to sharing more as the transformation continues.
