The last few days before Christmas will be very busy ones for consumers and also for scammers.
Even though the Christmas season is a time of goodwill towards all, scammers are ready to take advantage of your goodwill by stealing your hard-earned money, especially online, through fake charities, and fake websites. Danielle Mayoras is an attorney at the BRMM law firm, and she says consumers should look out for these red flags.
“Anytime someone’s putting pressure on you to act urgently, that’s a red flag to take a step back and really figure out what’s going on,” Mayoras said. “Something else is when someone calls you out of the blue, you didn’t call them. They’re a stranger and they’re asking for personal information. They’re saying they need something from you. Be aware that could be a scam as well. And anytime someone’s asking for personal information that is not publicly available, you should be concerned.”
Mayoris adds that if you believe that you have been the victim of a scam, you should contact your bank or your credit union immediately and put them on notice that your account may have been compromised.
