The South Haven Police Department says a weekend fire that damaged the exterior of the South Haven Water Filtration Plant and some adjacent outdoor restrooms was likely not the result of arson.
South Haven Area Emergency Services responded to the scene early Saturday, at first identifying the fire as suspicious. However, police say a suspect was found a few hours later, questioned, and released.
The department says, “It does not appear that the fire was purposely or maliciously set.”
The fire in some porta potties damaged the exterior wall, windows, and a digital sign at the water plant, but the facility’s operations were not affected.
Police now say they’ll refer the investigation on to the Van Buren County Prosecutor’s office for possible charges once the repair estimates are in.
