Palisades nuclear power plant restart delayed

The historic restart of Michigan’s Palisades nuclear power plant is facing a delay and now isn’t expected until early 2026. Holtec International, the company overseeing the project, confirmed the revised timeline after previously planning to resume power generation by the end of this year.

Palisades, located near South Haven, stopped operating in 2022 and was initially slated for decommissioning before plans shifted amid renewed interest in nuclear energy. If successful, it would be the first U.S. nuclear plant to restart after entering decommissioning.

Crews have spent more than a year repairing major components, including addressing cracked steam generator tubes. Federal regulators have given initial approval, and the project is backed by federal loan guarantees and state funding. Once operational, the plant could generate enough electricity to power hundreds of thousands of homes.
