The Berrien Community Foundation has announced the creation of four new scholarships this year, and it’s now taking applications for dozens more.
BCF Program Director Susan Matheny tells us anyone can help create a scholarship with the organization, and people have all sorts of reasons for doing so.
“Of course, one of the more popular ways is to honor a cherished loved one, but we also have scholarships that honor benevolent behavior like volunteerism or want to support students who want a career in the arts or a career in STEM,” Matheny said.
New this year is the Celebrating Miles Kelleher Cross Country and Track Scholarship, for a student who runs track. And non-profit 100 Women Strong is also offering a new scholarship. Matheny says it’s the group’s goal to help women remain independent by providing them with support to get over hurdles in life.
“And they don’t want one of those hurdles to stop them from going to school or going to work. So they have this scholarship that will help women who are returning to school or experiencing a life transition so that they can just have that support.”
There’s also the new Janet W. DeRubbo Scholarship, seeking to honor Janet DeRubbo’s lifelong dedication to education in Berrien County and supporting students who display academic excellence.
The fourth new scholarship is the Tim King Music Scholarship, supporting Berrien County high school graduates who have volunteer experience.
The deadline to apply for all BCF scholarships is February 10, and you can find a list of them right here.
