Coming up this Friday, the city of Buchanan will celebrate the season with its Holiday Parade and Community Tree Lighting.

Mayor Mark Weedon tells us the event was originally planned for November 29 but then rescheduled due to the weather. They’re excited to get to show off the newly-improved downtown after a major infrastructure project that kept some people away for much of the year.

We had an opportunity when we did the ribbon cutting and we weren’t quite ready because the weather wasn’t being fair to us,” Weedon said. “But now since then, we’ve since opened up completely and streetlights are on, streetlights are up, flags are up. We’re super excited to do the parade and really give everybody some joy for the season.”

Weedon says this is the first Holiday Parade and Community Tree Lighting to be organized between the Buchanan Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Development Authority, which just got its members appointed after being reformed this year.

The Holiday Parade will head down Front Street starting at 6:30 p.m., followed by a community program and the official tree lighting at The Commons immediately after the parade is finished. Weedon says downtown businesses will get in on the fun.

The downtown businesses have decorated their stores to compete for a chamber award for the best storefront for the holidays. So they will be announcing who the winner of that award is that night as well.”

The evening will also feature Santa and Mrs. Claus and children in their holiday finest. Everyone’s invited to come and celebrate.
