Republican Congressman John James is leading the race to be the next governor in Michigan, according to a recent poll.

Mitchell Research and Communications polled more than 600 likely Michigan voters ahead of next year’s election.

Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is leading the Democratic field ahead of Lieutenant Governor Garland Gilchrist and Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson.

When given the choice of James, Benson, or Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, who’s running as an independent, 37% of those polled support James, with 31% favor Benson and 18% are planning to vote for Duggan. 14% of respondents are undecided.

Duggan is getting more support from likely Democratic voters than likely Republican voters.
