We keep hearing news reports about proposed data centers around Michigan, in some cases causing controversy in their communities, but are there any planned in Berrien County?
The Berrien County Board of Commissioners was asked about that at Thursday’s regular meeting. County Administrator Brian Dissette said at this time, he’s not aware of any projects, and he’ll put it in writing.
“Put simply, the county has no tax abatement, no incentives that have been brought forward,” Dissette said. “There is no developer that the county is talking to. To the best of my knowledge, the township does not have any developer actively courting them. But with all of that said, I’ll take time and put pen to paper.”
Dissette said Cornerstone Alliance was marketing a space in Benton Township for potential use as a data center, but he’s not aware of them finding anyone. State Representative Joey Andrews also previously pushed legislation to create tax incentives for the developments, but it fizzled out in the Legislature as concern began to grow about data center water and power usage.
Commissioners were asked at Thursday’s meeting to keep the public fully informed about any possible data center developments.
