The Palisades Nuclear Power Plant in Covert is set to become a national test site for the next generation of nuclear energy.
The U.S. Department of Energy on Tuesday announced it’s awarding $400 million to Holtec Government Services to deploy two advanced small modular nuclear reactors at Palisades as part of a larger federal push to expand nuclear power across the U.S. The project is expected to double the output of Palisades, adding 600 megawatts of new generation to the existing plant.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer praised the announcement, calling it a major win for Michigan’s economy and clean energy future. She says the investment will help lower power costs, protect hundreds of good-paying jobs, and reaffirm Michigan’s leadership in energy innovation.
Palisades is already making history as the first nuclear plant in the nation to be restarted after shutting down, backed by more than $2.8 billion in federal loans and grants.
If all goes as planned, the small modular reactors would come online in the early 2030s.
