Most adults over the age of 65 still drive, but a sizeable majority say they avoid certain conditions.

53% say they avoid bad weather and 48% avoid driving at night. As those aging adults are scaling back, it’s a good idea to start planning ahead, especially as our driving abilities change over time. University of Michigan researcher Renee St. Louis says it’s important to think about these things.

So you kind of want to start these conversations early before a crisis happens,” St. Louis said. “So when somebody is still safely driving, opening up those conversations before it becomes a really urgent issue.”

St. Louis says it can be a sensitive conversation, so planning ahead of time can make that transition a lot smoother.

The results come from a survey done by the University of Michigan and the Transportation Research Institute.
