Mary L. Mills, a cherished soul whose life journey began on September 6, 1942, in Elkhart, Indiana, concluded her earthly chapter with grace and peace on November 23, 2025, at her residence, in Niles, Michigan. Born to the late Clifford B. and Gail J. (Stoneburner) McCreary, Mary’s early years were steeped in the warmth of a loving family and community that shaped the compassionate and spirited woman she would become.
Mary’s heart found its match when she wed Robert “Bob” L. Mills on a winter’s day in 1973, in the town where she first drew breath. Their union was a testament to love’s enduring strength, and together they navigated life’s ebb and flow, creating a legacy of love and devotion that would be their family’s foundation. Their love blossomed into life with their children, Robert L. Jr. (Carol) Mills and Kimberly M. Sullivan-Ortiz, and further flourished through their five grandchildren, as well as sixteen great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Mary’s spirit will continue to resonate through her two sisters, Doris (Drew) Fitzgerald of Washington and Jean Malcome of Florida, who, along with the rest of her family, will forever cherish her memory.
Mary’s intellectual pursuits did not wane after graduating from Elkhart High School in 1960, as she continued her education in college, laying the groundwork for what would become a life filled with professional achievements and community service. Mary’s dedication to her community was further exemplified in her role at the City of Niles city clerk’s office. Her entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly when she and Bob established Mills Photography in 1983 in Niles, capturing life’s precious moments for countless individuals and then went on to work for Lifetouch until her retirement in 2006. Mary’s dedication to her community was further exemplified in her role at the City of Niles city clerk’s office, a position she held until retirement. Even after her official retirement, Mary’s work ethic never faltered, and she continued to serve as a driver for local dental laboratories until a year before her passing.
A devout Christian, Mary’s faith was the compass by which she navigated her life, a faith she expressed and celebrated as a member of Michiana Christian Embassy in Niles. Her soulful voice and musical talents were a gift to all who heard her sing. As an accomplished vocalist with a stunning Mezzo-soprano range, she graced stages from the U.S. White House to Carnegie Hall, and her spiritual journey in song even took her to the sacred city of Jerusalem. Mary’s involvement with the Michiana Opera Guild, the South Bend Symphonic Choir, and the IUSB Chorus was not just a testament to her musical prowess but also her desire to connect with others through the power of music.
Mary’s life was a symphony of love, kindness, and faith. These virtues were the melodies that played in every aspect of her life, from the gentle way she interacted with her family and friends to the passion with which she pursued her interests. She was a beacon of light to her family, a guidepost of faith in her community, and a loving presence whose warmth could be felt by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
