Now that people are stringing up their holiday lights for the season, Indiana Michigan Power is out with some reminders to help customers stay safe while keeping their bills down.
I&M spokesperson Schnee Doyle tells us the first thing to do when preparing to decorate is to inspect the lights and cords to make sure there are no frayed wires or loose connections. Also remember to keep lights from touching anything flammable and avoid overloading circuits.
“Spread decorations and lights over multiple circuits that will help you avoid overheating and avoid a potential electrical fire,” Doyle said.
Doyle also says you should secure all cords so they don’t pose a tripping hazard. And know your surroundings when getting up on a ladder.
“Look up, look around and make sure that there are no overhead power lines before using that ladder.”
To save power, Doyle says customers should make sure their holiday lights are LEDs and connect them to timers. Other ways to save energy this holiday season include lowering the thermostat when leaving the house of if hosting a party.
When it comes to saving on hot water, Doyle says to take showers instead of baths and only run the dishwasher when it’s full.
