The Michigan Department of Transportation has completed the second year of its three-year, $204 million investment to rebuild I-94 in Berrien County.

MDOT spokesperson Nick Schirripa tells us after a busy construction season, the agency will be getting out of the way soon.

So we’ve got westbound traffic back on the westbound lanes,” Schirripa said. “The only thing we’ve really got going on yet, we had to do some concrete patching on bridges and concrete takes a little time to cure. So that curing process is happening now. So we are planning on everything being done and reopened before the Thanksgiving holiday.”

Throughout the construction season, Schirripa says MDOT rebuilt 8.5 miles of I-94 and four bridges. It also repaired nine other bridges. That’s not all.

We finally got the I -94 interchange with Red Arrow Highway done, Exit 23. Finally got that rebuilding project done, that was earlier in the summer. And then since then, obviously, we’ve done the westbound lanes have been rebuilt, including the ramps at Napier Avenue, Pipestone Road, and Niles Road.”

In 2026, crews will return to rebuild the eastbound I-94 lanes and ramps between Britain and Washington avenues. Schirripa says once that’s finished, MDOT should be done with major projects on I-94 in Berrien County for several years.

The governor’s office estimates the three-year I-94 project has directly and indirectly supported 2,911 jobs.
