The Lincoln Township Board of Trustees has taken action to conduct a study on the feasibility of building a trail along Hickory Creek from the village of Stevensville to St. Joseph.

The idea of such a trail has been kicked around for years and would require the cooperation of multiple municipalities and residents. At a meeting this week, Lincoln Township Supervisor Glenn Youngstedt told trustees the idea now is to have Abonmarche do a comprehensive deep dive into the idea, planning out the route and meeting with property owners who might be affected.

Some members of the board objected, telling Youngstedt people will not want a trail running through their backyards.

I understand that, but we don’t know exactly where it would be at this time, and that’s why we need to do a good feasibility study,” Youngstedt said.

Trustee Marc Florian said this study could finally put the matter to bed, one way or another.

The cost for the study would be shared among Lincoln and St. Joseph Township and the village of Stevensville at a cost of $8,900 to each. Trustee Terrie Smith questioned if that was fair, but the board voted to approve the study on a vote of four to three. The no votes were from Smith, Amy Pheifer, and Deb Peterson.
