A 43-year-old Edwardsburg man is recovering, and possibly facing charges, after a break-in and water rescue by police in Watervliet Township on Friday night.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department says 911 received multiple calls from the 5,200 block of North Watervliet Road around 10 p.m. about a man in an apparently manic state who’d jumped out the window of a home. Callers also reported the man, now injured, had forced his way into another home and then run out through the yard.

Responding officers found the man standing in waist-deep water in the Paw Paw River near the North Watervliet Road bridge. They say he was agitated, striking the water with a stick, and yelling for help. When he didn’t comply with instructions from police to get out of the water, a sheriff’s deputy and Michigan State Police trooper took control of him and removed him as he struggled.

The man was taken to Corewell Health St. Joseph for medical evaluation and treatment, and the case has been referred to the Berrien County Prosecutor for possible charges.

The man’s name has not been released.
