The city of South Haven is looking to do some improvements at its ice rink.
At a meeting this week, the city council voted to declare its intent to issue bonds of up to $2.6 million for the upgrades. City Manager Kate Hosier told members due to the design of the rink, a large amount of gravel has to be hauled in each year. The coming improvements would avoid that.
“What the DDA has done is they’ve gotten a feasibility study done for redoing the pavilion underneath so that we can encapsulate the chilling coils within concrete, and then we would no longer have to bring in all these yards of gravel that we have to bring in and then take away,” Hosier said. “So this would all be within a closed system. We’ve already upgraded the chiller.”
The new in-pad cooling system will tie in with the recently upgraded chiller system. The project will also include parking improvements.
Although the project could prove to be less costly, Hosier said the bond of up to $2.6 million is being sought to ensure the amount borrowed will actually pay for all the work amid steadily rising construction costs.
The project is expected to kick off in March or April, depending on weather
