NFL – Bears look for improvement Williams after signing Gardner-Johnson to help defense
The Chicago Bears have signed veteran defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson in an effort to shore up their injury-riddled defense. They’re also hoping for improved play from quarterback Caleb Williams, who has struggled over the past four games. Williams says he felt like he played well in last weekend’s loss at Baltimore, with the exception of a key interception. Coach Ben Johnson agrees with that assessment. The Bears are 4-3 after their four-game winning streak ended with the loss to the Ravens. They play at Cincinnati on Sunday.
NFL – McCarthy, Vikings reset at QB while Wentz preps for season-ending surgery
The quarterback situation might be settling into place in this frustrating and painful start to the season for the Minnesota Vikings. J.J. McCarthy has been cleared to return for Sunday’s game at the Detroit Lions. He missed five starts with a high ankle sprain. Carson Wentz filled in and played half of that time with a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder. The 10th-year veteran will soon have season-ending surgery. McCarthy said he feels great now. He started the first two games before the injury and recently re-watched those with coach Kevin O’Connell to focus on his fundamentals.
NCAAFB – C.J. Carr’s quick progression has put Notre Dame back in the playoff hunt
C.J. Carr’s learning curve has been more like a drive down the expressway — bumpy, full of obstacles and fast. Carr has settled in after losing his first two games as Notre Dame’s starting quarterback. He’s rebounded with five straight wins including a signature win over rival Southern California before Notre Dame’s second bye of the season. Carr and the Fighting Irish begin the home stretch of their season at Boston College on Saturday. They’ve climbed back to No. 12 in the rankings and Carr’s improving play has put Notre Dame back in the playoff conversation.
