NBA – Jordan criticizes load management in latest installment of NBC conversation
Michael Jordan has shared his thoughts on NBA players missing games for load management. Speaking in an NBC series, he said it shouldn’t be needed. Jordan explained he never wanted to miss a game because it was a chance to prove himself and entertain fans. He recalled playing through a sprained ankle early in his career and famously playing while sick during Game 5 of the 1997 NBA Finals. Despite being bedridden, he scored 38 points, leading the Bulls to victory. Jordan emphasized the importance of pushing through challenges to perform for fans.
WNBA – WNBA offers 30-day extension as CBA deadline looms, AP sources say
Two people familiar with the decision say the WNBA has offered players a 30-day extension to continue negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement. The people spoke to The Associated Press on Tuesday night on condition of anonymity because no official announcement has been made. The current CBA is set to expire on Friday and tensions have been rising in recent weeks as the sides try to work toward a new deal. In 2019, when the last CBA deal had expired, the two sides agreed to a 60-day extension and eventually ratified the current CBA in January 2020. ESPN was the first to report the extension offer.
NCAAFB – Michigan and coach Moore drop appeal of penalties from sign-stealing saga
Michigan and football coach Sherrone Moore have dropped their appeal of NCAA penalties stemming from a sign-stealing operation. Michigan was fined tens of millions of dollars and Moore was suspended for a third game by the NCAA as punishment for a sprawling scandal that has loomed over the Wolverines for two years, including during their run to the national championship in the 2023 season. The 21st-ranked Wolverines host Purdue on Saturday. Moore withdrew his appeal on Sept. 29 after serving a two-game suspensions. He will also miss the 2026 season-opening game. The school withdrew its appeal on Oct. 6.
NCAAMBB – Tom Izzo shoots to surpass modest expectations in his 31st season at MSU
No. 22 Michigan State is coming off a surprising season, winning the conference by three games and reaching the NCAA Tournament’s Elite Eight. The Spartans will shoot to do it again under Hall of Fame coach Tom Izzo in his 31st season. Michigan State is the fifth-highest ranked Big Ten team in the AP Top 25, modest expectations for a team that lost several players from last year. The Spartans were picked to finish sixth in the Big Ten last year and won the conference for an 11th time under Izzo, whose made his 11th Elite Eight appearance.
NCAAMBB – Dusty May’s new-look, 7th-ranked Wolverines led by transfers
No. 7 Michigan has a new-look team in Dusty May’s second year. He turned over most of the roster after a successful debut season, extending the program’s Sweet 16 streak to six years after winning the Big Ten Tournament. He added eight new players after eight departed. The Wolverines landed former UAB star Yaxel Lendeborg out of the transfer portal. The 6-foot-9 forward is a preseason All-America player. He can score, rebound and defend well enough to be regarded as one of the top players in college basketball.
NCAAMBB – Burton and Shrewsberry hope for ND’s 1st winning season in 4 years
Coach Micah Shrewsberry enters his third season with a solid foundation, and a roster has his imprint all over it. The Fighting Irish are deep, big and versatile. And with their starting backcourt, Markus Burton and Braeden Shrewsberry, there is reason for optimism Notre Dame can post its first winning season in four years, maybe even earn its second postseason bid since 2018. But unlike other schools that have relied heavily on the transfer portal to rebuild, Shrewsberry has not. The former Purdue assistant seems to have followed Matt Painter’s of recruiting and developing players. It will be interesting to see if that works at Notre Dame.
NCAA – NCAA delays rule change permitting college athletes to bet on professional sports
The NCAA is delaying a rule change that will allow athletes and athletic department staff members to bet on professional sports. The Division I Board voted Tuesday to delay the effective date of the sports betting legislative change, moving it from Nov. 1 to Nov. 22, one day after the close of a membership rescission period. A rarely used rule allows 30 days for each Division I school to vote to rescind a proposal if it is adopted by less than 75% of the Division I cabinet. The original vote to approve betting was under that threshold earlier this month.
