Unit 2 at the Cook Nuclear Plant is back online following its fall refueling outage.
Indiana Michigan Power says the Bridgman facility reconnected the unit to the transmission grid early Saturday morning after the 35-day shutdown, which began September 20. Unit 1 remained at full power throughout the work.
Along with refueling, crews completed regular maintenance and several major projects, including inverter replacements, upgrades to the vibration monitoring system for reactor coolant pumps, and inspection and maintenance on the main turbine and generator. Utility officials say multiple pump motors were also repaired or replaced.
More than 1,200 contract workers joined plant staff to perform about 9,000 tasks over nearly 188,000 work hours during two daily 12-hour shifts.
The Cook plant’s two units generate enough emission-free electricity to power more than one and a half million homes. Indiana Michigan Power says safety and reliability remain the top priorities as the units prepare for the next 18 months of operation.
