The city of South Haven has issued a boil water advisory for about 800 customers of its water system.
City Water and Sewer Superintendent Dustin Guminski tells us it’s due to an issue that occurred around 11 a.m. Thursday.
“We had a water main break on a large pipe that was feeding our area,” Guminski said. “So in order to remake the repair, we had to isolate some valves, which shut down a system and caused a loss in pressure. So we had to issue a boil water [advisory].”
Pressure in the system was restored around 4 p.m.
“The main has been repaired. We are going around and turning the valves back on and going to flush the system out to get the air back out of the lines and make sure we have good water in places and take samples.”
Those samples were taken Thursday and more will be taken Friday.
Guminski says the boil water advisory will likely remain in place until sometime Saturday. It affects the northern area of the city water system, from East Wells Street in the south all the way to 107th Avenue in Allegan County to the north. It’s bounded by I-196 to the east and Lake Michigan to the west.
Residents in the affected area are advised to boil any water they intend to use for drinking, cooking, or making ice until the advisory is lifted.
